AMAN produces a wide range of guides about the various legal instruments to defend indigenous peoples’ rights for its members, indigenous communities throughout the archipelago.
UNDRIP
The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) sets the international minimum standards for the protection, respect and fulfillment of the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, and emphasizes that the collective rights of Indigenous Peoples are:
- The right to determine their own destiny
- The right to lands, territories and natural resources
- The right to cultural identity and intellectual property
- The right to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC)
- The right to choose models and other forms of development which are appropriate on ther their own territories.
AMAN has produced an Indonesian translation of the UNDRIP and distributed it to indigenous communities.
Guide to FPIC
The FPIC (free, prior and informed consent) book produced by AMAN is a guide for activists. FPIC is defined as free consent without force, which is preceded by adequate information about the causes and effects of a project. FPIC consists of four cumulative elements.
- Free, meaning without coercion.
- Prior, meaning that the government or company must first obtain permission from the community
- Informed, meaning that there is an open flow of information about the positive and negative consequences of a project.
- Consent meaning that approval is given by communities themselves.
